The Laboratory of Ecology and Environmental Monitoring (LEEM) had been an integral part of the PG & Research Department of Zoology at C. Abdul Hakeem College (Autonomous). Established in 2024, the laboratory quickly gained its specialized research focusing on Integrated Ecology and Environmental Management in aquatic ecosystems. Despite being a recent addition, LEEM had developed strong connections with prominent national and international research institutions and NGOs (Mangrove Foundation of India), to advance its research objectives. The laboratory aimed to create comprehensive datasets that could aid in understanding long-term ecological changes, assessing the health of ecosystems, and providing scientifically-backed recommendations for sustainable practices in fisheries and aquaculture, along with biodiversity and human livelihoods. In addition with this, LEEM also concentrates on fisheries and toxicological studies using various scocio-economically important species towards the well-being of humans. Currently, LEEM adopted seven doctoral students along with three master’s students to up hold the laboratory research activities. In near future, LEEM has plan for the training and workshops for students and researchers along with seminar series and conferences to increase the knowledge and fulfill the gaps in environmental studies. LEEM also welcomes researchers and students of various institutions for their active participation in collaboration and research activities.

The Department of Zoology had once been hailed as the nerve center of research activities at the college, earning high praise for its remarkable achievements and its commitment to round-the-clock research. With a dedicated team of 13 staff members with various specializations boost the department in high. Its extensive departmental library, boasting an impressive collection of over 2,000 books was considered a treasure trove of knowledge and intellectual wealth. This exposure placed the college on the global academic map, greatly enhancing its popularity. Additionally, the department had secured substantial funding for research projects from prominent national agencies such as DBT, DST, UGC, ICAR, NFDB, and MoES, along with contributions from international organizations. Support from the UGC for postgraduate development, as well as funding from DST-FIST for the advancement of science and technology, had further strengthened the department’s research capabilities. Over the years, the department had produced more than 40 Ph.D. graduates and over 50 M.Phil. scholars, a testament to its academic rigor and the faculty’s dedication to cultivating future scientists and researchers.

C. Abdul Hakeem College was managed by the Melvisharam Muslim Educational Society (MMES), which had been established in 1919. Late Nawab C. Abdul Hakeem Sahib, a leading Business Magnate, Philanthropist and Nationalist of fame, was its Founder President, The Society has gradually progressed across these 8 decades. To start with, there was only a Primary School under this Society followed by the C. Abdul Hakeem College itself was founded in 1965. The institution was affiliated with Thiruvalluvar University in Vellore. At the time, it offered 14 UG and 5 PG programs, alongside Ph.D. research, diploma and certificate courses provided by different departments. Boasting a solid infrastructure and notable research accomplishments, the college had earned accreditation by NAAC with an "A+" grade in 2024 and Autonomy by UGC in 2014. The college stood out for its academic and research excellence, making it a respected institution in the region. At present, it manages 11 Institutions from the nursery level to a First Grade College with Five P.G. Departments and Three Research Departments. They include M.M.E.S. Arts and Science College for Women and C. Abdul Hakeem College of Engineering and Technology, an I.S.O certified Centre of learning.
